Display Ad Technical Specifications

Kansas Traveler is printed on high-quality newsprint on a high-speed web press. If you are creating your ad, some of the following specifications are required and some are to get the best reproduction for your ad. We both want your ad to look great, right?
  • Use CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black inks) for the color mode; use Greyscale for black and white. Do not use Spot colors (pantone colors); convert these to CMYK.

  • When making an ad for the regular part of the paper, make the ad width one of the widths in the table below. Special sections may (or may not) have a different width.
    1 col 2 cols 3 cols 5 cols
    1.861" 3.889" 5.917" 9.972"
  • Make black text and graphics, pure black (with no C or M or Y inks).  This ensures that your text/graphics will print crisply.

  • Text size of 8-point or greater is recommended.  If using reverse type (light on dark background), keep serif and non-bold type 9-point or larger; otherwise it may disappear into reverse areas.  Multi-color text is best at 12-point or larger.

  • Font styles that have skinny parts may print poorly (the skinny parts may disappear). Avoid these font styles for best reproduction.

  • For photo resolution use at least 200dpi. For text and logos use 600dpi.  Note: an image from a webpage can be as low as 72dpi and can look great on the screen but is unlikely to print well.

  • Before including graphics or photos into your ad, lighten them.  The ad will print darker than what you see on a computer screen.

  • Keep total ink density below 240%.  In other words, if you add up the percentage of each ink color (cmyk) used on any part of the ad, that total needs to be below 240%.  This prevents the web from breaking on the presses.

  • Submit the ad as either an Adobe Acrobat PDF, a TIF or an EPS. Include all related files such as fonts and graphics embedded.  Do not flatten - include all the layers.

If your email allows, you can send us the ad as an email attachment.  For very large ads we can set up an ftp account for you.  Or, of course, you can mail it on a CD if time permits.
Please let us know if some of this doesn't make sense, either by phone (316-688-0905) or email (howell@kansastraveler.com).
