Types of stories we like to get:
- Travel-related topics - tells about something people can see (open to the public).
- Written in third person - unless the story is supposed to be a first person account such as in a "Traveler's Discovery." Most stories we publish are in third person.
- General in nature - Kansaswide or referring to something covering more than just a single event or a single business. Examples we've had include corn mazes, cheese producers and the Kansas Sampler Festival.
- Events - unless an event is unique (the only one of its kind held in Kansas or truly a Kansaswide event) we are unlikely to print a story about an event.
- Fact filled - educational in nature with facts that have been checked for accuracy.
- Length - short (200-500 words usually). Stories will almost surely have to be edited to fit the space available. Very long submissions may be too long to edit and hence not be printed for that reason.
- Photos & Graphics - when appropriate, a photo or series of photos is desirable. These need to be high resolution (taken at the "best"' setting on a digital camera). We will process the photos so the raw version is the best way to submit photos.
Other things to provide when submitting a story:
- How you want your byline to appear - do you want a middle initial or do you usually go by just the first letter of your first name, or...?
- A short bio - we usually print a short bio of the person or persons who submitted the story. Short means about 25 words, which may end up being edited down. A bio can say where you live (town), what org or business you are associated with, who your family members are, and/or how your personal life relates to the story.
- Your contact information (phone and ground-mail address) - so we can send you a copy of the paper and call you with any last-minute questions.
- Photo credits - who is the photographer or the institution (for courtesy photos)?
How to submit a story (to howell@kansastraveler.com):
- Our preference is to receive stories and photos via email. If you don't use email or if your email cannot handle large files (such as photo files) we can accept items through regular mail and scan your photos. We can also set up an ftp account for you to send large photo files electronically.
- If you are not sure a story idea is going to work in Kansas Traveler you can contact us with your idea and, although we can never promise a story will be printed, we can certainly tell you if we think the idea fits Kansas Traveler's purpose.
- Text for your story can be sent simply as straight text as part of an email. Or you can attach a Word file, a pdf or a simple text document.
What we have found we cannot accept:
- We have never been able to read a Publisher file created by someone else.
- WordPerfect files need to be saved in Word format.
- Photos that are from slides are usually poor quality when converted to print, unless you have a magic way to convert these. If you do, we'd like to know how.
- A submission needs to be in story format. We rely on you to provide the basic story.
Rights:
- Stories need to be original (written by you). We reserve the right to reprint your story and photos in future Kansas Traveler print and website publications. You retain the copyright for use elsewhere.
- By submitting a story you agree to let us publish your story.
- Usually (not always) we need to know that a story you've submitted will not appear in another publication before it appears in Kansas Traveler.
